Totally Un-American

Health/Fitness is a lifestyle.  Seemingly, it’s an un-American lifestyle, what with the obesity “epidemic” on the rise.  It doesn’t help that we’re in a country full of enablers, either.  Obesity is a disease.  Over-eating is a psychological problem.  That’s all well and good, if you’re going to overeat, overeat the RIGHT food!!  Problem solved!!

I grew up on the typical American diet, most meals based around a slab of meat with some potatoes and a veggie.  Throw in there the occasional fast food treat, loads of sugary drinks, ice cream, candy, cake, etc., etc., etc.  It’s a recipe for disaster and certainly not what’s best for our bodies.  With all the experts telling us to eat loads of grains and dairy, it’s hard to know what is best to eat.

I recently did a lot of research on the subject.  Read a few books, scoured the Internet, and talked to some people who seem to be pretty healthy.  No experts or anything, just people that are fit, real people.  I’ve come to the conclusion that the Paleo diet makes the most sense for me.

What is the Paleo diet?

In a nutshell, the Paleo diet is simply what our stone age ancestors used to eat.  Lean meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.  There is no calorie counting, no portion control, nothing like that.  I recently read the book “The Paleo Diet.”  It taught me a lot about how different foods affect our bodies and why the Paleo diet was the right choice for me.  The Paleo lifestyle has a virtually unlimited amount of delicious food that fits within the guidelines of the diet that  you can get at your local grocery store.  I’ve been on the diet for two weeks now, and I feel great.  I have energy all day long, with no lows from sugar withdrawal, and I’m rarely hungry.  If I am, I can snack all I want, as long as it’s on healthy food.  Again…lean meats, fruit, veggies, nuts, things like that.

What can’t I eat?

Things that are restricted on the diet are grains, processed foods, sugar, starchy vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams), legumes (peanuts, peas, beans), and unhealthy fats.  Basically, everything that the caveman had access to is in the diet, the things they didn’t (which are things that came about with the Agricultural revolution) have access to are out.  It’s pretty simple.

If you’re looking for a way to lose weight or you just want to eat healthier, I highly recommend that you do your research and look into the Paleo way of life.  Take a look at the book I linked above, and also look at Robb Wolf’s 30 Day Total Transformation.

This is not some fad diet that will work for awhile and then stop.  This is a lifestyle change.  Not only will it help you lose weight and get to your optimum weight, it can help fight diseases, it will ensure you get the required amount of vitamins and minerals that your body requires for healthy living.  Don’t take my word for it, though, try it yourself.  It can’t hurt to give it a shot.  Try it for 30 days, and if you don’t feel and look better, then give it up.  I think you’ll find that you WILL feel and look better, though.  Comment below, let me know your thoughts, your experiences with it.

America the Fat and Lazy

Obesity Campaign Poster

I’m not perfect, never claimed to be.  I can say this, though…the majority of obese people in America are lazy and (consciously or subconsciously) choose to get and stay that way.  Maybe that’s harsh.  Maybe it pisses you off to read it.  I don’t care.  I just read an article that said that 42% of adults will be obese by the year 2030.  It goes on to say that those adults are not lazy or stupid.  They blame American marketing.  The ads proclaiming that sugary drinks are “healthy” and people fall for it.  First of all, if you can’t do your OWN research on said beverages, you’re lazy.  If you BELIEVE that they’re healthy, you’re stupid.

When I was a young man, I used to eat anything and everything.  People always told me if I kept eating like that, I’d get fat.  My metabolism wasn’t going to last forever.  I just nodded and continued stuffing my face, not caring what they said or thought.  Beer by the gallon, soda, fried foods, fast food, anything.  Once I got into my 30′s, things changed.  I didn’t get so far as to be “obese,” but I definitely started getting a beer belly.  I didn’t like it, but I was still too lazy to do anything about it.  Then, recently, I went in for a physical, and the doc told me that my cholesterol and blood pressure were getting high.  Not to the point of being a problem yet, but if I didn’t change things, they would become a problem.  That was enough for me.  I don’t even take aspirin when I have a headache…I’m not taking drugs for the rest of my life to regulate what a simple lifestyle change could fix.  So, I took the necessary steps.  I changed my diet up and started working out.

I learned at a young age that enabling someone to continue a bad habit wasn’t a good thing.  That’s precisely what’s going on in this article.  It’s not your fault you’re a fat pig, it’s corporate America’s fault.  It’s everyone’s fault but yours.  Keep doing the same things you’ve always done, buy those greasy cheeseburgers and fries from Mc-pick-a-place.  You were lied to.  You think that’s health food.  It’s ok, buddy.  NO!  With the invention of the Internet, any information you want (and some you don’t) is at your fingertips!!  Anytime, anywhere!  USE IT!!  Let me rephrase that, use it for something other than porn, social networking, stupid ass YouTube videos, games, and stupid jokes.  It’s the INFORMATION superhighway, use it as such!!

Get up off your butt and go for a walk, maybe eventually you can turn it into a run.  Change your lifestyle.  Don’t let America stay the laughing stock of the world.  We’re better than that.  Thanks for reading my rant.  :)

Eating Like a Caveman

I started the Paleo diet about a week ago.  I read a couple of books about it as well as searched the Internet for all the info I could find.  So I decided that to get started, I would use the Quickstart Guide & Paleo Challenge.  I like the fact that it gives you set menus, along with associated shopping lists.

So today, I had the Beef & Vegetable chili.  It was pretty delicious.  I’m not used to eating all these veggies, and I have to admit, this first week has been rough.  Not only have I felt low on energy, I have been craving sweets…especially ice cream.  Ugh.  The funny thing is that I don’t really eat sweets that often, but now that I know I can’t have them, I guess it’s making it worse.  Heh.

Everything I’ve read warned about the first few days up to first couple of weeks.  They say that I’d have less energy, feel tired and rundown.  It’s my body “detoxing.”  I’m going to give it a chance, because I’ve heard nothing but good things from people I know that are on it.
Click Here to get an e-book by Robb Wolf, one of the world’s leading experts on the Paleo diet, entitled “Robb Wolf’s 30 Day Total Transformation.”  It’s a great book to use to get started on the Paleo diet, and on the road to a better diet, and ultimately, better health.
The main reason I started it in the first place is because not too long ago, I went in for my yearly physical and the doc told me that my cholesterol and my blood pressure were “getting up there.”  Nothing to worry about yet, but if I didn’t change my ways, I would have to worry.  I’m not going to take medicine for the rest of my life.  No thank you.  I don’t even take aspirin when I get a headache.  I don’t take any medication, unless it’s something prescribed by a doctor.  I’m going to fight this with everything I’ve got.  So, I changed my diet, and got a lot more active.  First, I started with P90X, which I did like, but it got boring.  It did get me in pretty good shape, though.  I enjoyed it for the most part.  Then, a couple weeks ago, I discovered CrossFit, did some research on it, and now I’m hooked!

If you’re on or have been on the Paleo diet, leave a comment…let me know how it worked for you, how it’s going.  Any tips or good recipes that you ran across.  Thanks!
